Inulin is a soluble fiber that is found in a variety of plants, but often in the roots. It is a type of carbohydrate that is not broken down by digestive enzymes in the small intestine but reaches the large intestine intact where it is fermented by beneficial probiotic bacteria.
Inulin is found naturally in foods such as asparagus, bananas, beets, carrots, garlic, Jerusalem artichokes, leeks, onions, and wheat. It is also added to many processed foods as a fiber supplement and sweetener.
There are many benefits of inulin, as it is a prebiotic fiber. Some of these benefits include:
- Aiding in weight loss by increasing satiety and helping to regulate blood sugar levels in diabetics.
- Improved gastrointestinal health due to the promotion of healthy gut bacteria, leading to reduced frequency of constipation or other gastrointestinal issues.
- Improved absorption of minerals, such as calcium and magnesium, due to its ability to attach to these minerals.
- Reduced risk of heart disease and other cardiovascular problems due to its cholesterol-lowering effects.
- Anti-inflammatory effects due to its ability to modulate gut bacterial colony size.
